I purchased a Smithy 1324 granite 3-in-one machine Mill-Drill-Lathe in 2001; this was my first machine tool. For gunsmith hobby work this is all I needed according to some of the books I got. This is true, the Smithy is all you really need for hobby gunsmith work and I built a 338-06 from a Mauser 98 action with the Smithy that easily shoots 1 MOA.

Jun 16, 2010· If you have limited funds I would recommend the Smithy Granite MAX series 1340, it has a larger head stock hole (1.6”), will accept longer material (40”) and more speeds. They also have increased the distance from the mill center to the lath head to allow larger work pieces.
Joe: If you are space limited the Smithy Granite is a capable machine. I bought a used 1340 about 6-7 years ago and use it frequently. The mill is nothing special, but probably doesn't have any more limitations than an equivalent size stand alone round column mill.

Sep 04, 2016· My Smithy Granite has been rock solid for 5 years. Nine form 1's plus several barrel shortening projects. I like it because it doesn't take up the space of 2 machines in my garage. If I had unlimited space I would probably go with separate machines but that is not the case. Smithy makes a great product IMHO.

One of the most useful large tools I have is my Smithy Granite 1340 MX, Here is a video showing some of the parts I made on it.
